What is a wiki?

A wiki is simply a collection of written articles that anyone can edit or add to. Every page, including this one, is an article. Anyone can read, edit or discuss any article. The articles in Vipipedia contain practical advice and information for people with vision impairments. All the articles have been written by readers of the wiki. The fact that any reader (including you) can write a new article or improve any existing article by editing it means that the information contained within this wiki remains up to date and useful. That's the whole point of a wiki. The best known wiki is Wikipedia, the online encyclopaedia.

What's New On Vipipedia?

This week, VIPipedia is being presented to a group of students attending the International Computer Camp, in Helsinki, Finland.

It is hoped that students in Helsinki will add many articles to our wiki, both during the camp and when they go back home too.

How to use this wiki

There's not much to it. Every page, including this one, consists of just a single article. To find an article on a particular topic, the best thing is to use the search and see if anyone's written one yet. You do not have to register or log in to read articles but you do have to if you want to write new articles or edit existing ones. When you log in, you will see the links for editing and discussing the current article, adding a new article and a few other things. If you are going to edit an article or write a new one, please read Editing basics first. This tells you how to use the wiki editor and how to format the structure of an article (headings, subheadings, etc.) so it is easy for people to read.

That's more or less all you need to know.

There is no overall index or table of contents for the wiki (although someone might decide to write one one day). There are no section 'navigation' links that you would normally find on a website, so if you have been looking for them, stop now because they're not there!

Please feel free to contribute by writing articles about any aspect of living with sight loss that you think other people may find useful. You are also encouraged to edit any article if you know you can improve it. Really! The only condition is that all additions or edits should follow the wiki content policies. If you do not follow the content policies then the likelihood is that someone else will immediately edit your article so that it does!

If, after reading this, you still have unanswered questions, go to the Help pages where everything is explained. Please enjoy VIPipedia, tell other people about it and contribute if you can.
